Skype Ransomware Emerges

Ransomware has made its way to Skype. Cybercriminals are hitting Skype users with fake Adobe Flash advertisements that contain a nasty strain of ransomware.

According to V3, the ransomware disguises itself in the form of a critical update notification designed to swindle unsuspecting users and infect their PC. The scam uses our old friend Locky, one of the most common types of ransomware. Once the ransomware is downloaded, the victim is instructed to enable macros to read the document. Once enabled, Locky begins encrypting a large array of file types.

Microsoft is urging Skype users to remain vigilant and avoid opening unsolicited attachments. They also recommend installing antivirus software to avoid falling victim to the nasty threat.
