Refer Great Talent, Contribute to your Community
By John DeWolfThe technology industry in the Boston area is a fast growing, exciting place to be. Given the health of the market, good software engineer and developer talent can be tough to come by. It’s an extremely competitive market and these particular hires are in serious demand. For this reason, we weren’t surprised to see the folks over at HubSpot offer to pay $30,000.00 for developer referrals.
As an emerging startup, we can’t yet toss cash into referral fees the way they have. So we sat down and asked ourselves what we could do to compete?
We think Backupify is a pretty cool place to work, with a great corporate culture and really interesting problems to solve. Our company is doing big things with a relatively small team. Come here and you’ll be a valuable player on a smart, growing team; your voice will be heard. We’re building a great company and those who join will be part of our ongoing success. Not to mention, we think you’ll look better in Backupify blue than HubSpot orange. (Seriously, who looks good in orange?)
While a great company culture and the lure of joining a fast growing, successful start up are critical components for attracting software engineers and developers, we knew we also needed an enticing referral program of our own. But, what if we could do something truly different to attract top talent? What if we could source key hires and also give back to our community?
We talked about a way in which we could incorporate goodwill, generosity, and philanthropy and came up with a referral program where we acquire top talent AND help worthy causes. That’s right: do good for yourself and the world at the same time.
Our program: if you refer someone before July 31st that we subsequently hire…
- We’ll donate $5,000 to the charity of your choice in your name the first day they show up for work.
- We’ll pay you $10,000 90 days after they start.
- Or, the good samaritan option – have all $15,000 donated directly to charity.
If you’re interested here are the details and rules we’ve set up to make sure everything is fair. To receive credit you must…
- Personally know the candidate and the candidate must validate the relationship.
- Be the first person to submit the candidate.
- Submit through our web form (no email submissions) so we can fairly determine who was the first person to submit the candidate.
- Submit prior to July 31, 2013.
- Make sure the candidate can meet with us in person within 30 days of your submission.
- Of course the tax man gets his cut so you’ll need to provide your social security number in order to pay taxes on your referral fee.
