Protecting Data in the Cloud: The Truth About SaaS Backup – A Spiceworks Study
By John DeWolfWe all know that more and more companies are turning to the cloud. No surprises there! These companies are saving money and increasing efficiency by using cloud apps across their businesses. Analyst firm Gartner estimates that SaaS sales are projected to reach $21.3 billion by 2015.
While companies understand all the benefits of the cloud, many still don’t quite get SaaS backup. Enter Spiceworks, the world’s largest vertical network for IT. Spiceworks recently conducted a survey of more than 200 IT professionals to learn how data is currently being backed up in SaaS environments. The new market insights report “Protecting Data in the Cloud: The Truth about SaaS Backup” reveals how IT professionals think about data protection in the cloud.
Here’s a sampling of the results from the survey:
According to the survey, 81 percent of IT professionals feel that the data stored in their SaaS applications is “very to extremely” important.
BUT
Half of respondents at 52 percent don’t back up or plan to back up data within their SaaS applications.
AND
40 percent of survey respondents have lost data within their SaaS applications
IT TURNS OUT
79 percent believe that their SaaS application is being backed up by their provider and 33 percent are unaware of any backup solutions for their SaaS Applications.
Thankfully 48 percent either currently back up this data or at least plan to back it up using cloud-to-cloud backup, manual exports, API’s or other custom methods.
The top three features for those either using (or planning to use) a backup service for their SaaS applications include:
- Cost
- Security
- Automated daily backups
