Backupify For Office 365: Enterprise-Class Security With Ease

When evaluating Microsoft Office 365 backup solutions, security is an essential consideration. There are a variety of O365 backup products available today, and the ways vendors deliver security vary significantly among products. And, of course, there are pros and cons to each approach. One way Backupify differs from many competing O365 backup vendors is its focus on security. Backupify for Office 365 offers enterprise-class security without the implementation and management challenges of the competition.

Backupify security begins with encryption. Each O365 account Backupify backs up receives a unique AES 256-bit encryption key to protect data at rest and in transit to the Datto Cloud. All data written for the account is encrypted with that key prior to storage. All authenticated user interactions and all data transmissions with O365 occur over TLS 1.2 encrypted tunnels. Also, Backupify has completed a SOC 2 Type II audit and has achieved HIPAA compliance as well. Backupify undergoes regular penetration testing and vulnerability scanning to maintain the security of customer data. As companies evaluate what O365 backup solutions might work best for their needs, compliance is typically a top priority. For example, any company in the healthcare industry will absolutely care about working with a HIPAA compliant vendor.

Another important difference between Backupify for Office 365 and other O365 backup products has to do with impersonation rights in O365. Typically, O365 backup applications require users to configure impersonation rights before accounts can be tied to the backup service. This is a time-consuming, manual process. And as a result, there is no easy way for administrators to revoke permissions/access to the data set. Also, because authentication is password-based, any time an O365 password is changed, it must be manually updated in the backup solution.

Backupify, on the other hand, uses an OAuth token-based authentication process. OAuth is an open standard for authorization that is designed to allow applications to access data in other applications without sharing user passwords. For example, Facebook and Twitter use OAuth to allow users to integrate their services with third-party applications. OAuth tokens allows Backupify to securely authenticate O365 accounts without actually having access them, which is not the case with some competing products. And, because OAuth is token-based, there is no need to manually update passwords in Backupify to ensure data is protected, dramatically streamlining management. Finally, it is easy to implement and requires no manual setup which means admins save precious time.

Gartner now forecasts that adoption of SaaS office productivity applications will grow to 25 percent by the end of 2017, 50 percent by 2020 and 90 percent by 2027. If you are already using Microsoft Office 365 or considering a migration in the near future, SaaS backup security should be an important factor in your data protection plan.
